Voice Change
Voice Change
Today We shall learn how to change the voice.
In order to change the voice we must know what is the object of the sentences. To know the object we have to ask question to the verb with " what " or " Whom "
1. Here is the example : I write a letter. Here if we ask a question to the verb " Write" ( What do I write?) with " What " then answer comes " a letter". So " a letter " is definitely object .
2. He teaches us Here if we ask a question to the verb "teach" with "Whom" ( Whom does he teach ? ) then answer comes us So here "us" is definitely object.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example : I write a letter. Now we shall change the sentence active to passive.
Ans : A letter is written by me.
Position Number : 1 2 3 4 5
Explanation of the answer according to position number.
Position 1. ( a letter) : We have to write the object the sentence. Here object is "A letter"
Position 2. ( is) : We have to write auxiliary verb in this position. What auxiliary verb should we use here, it will depend on the table below :
Present Indefinite Tense : am/is/are
Present Continuous Tense : am being/ is being/ are being
Present Perfect Tense : have been/ has been.
Past Indefinite Tense : was/ were
Past Continuous Tense : was being / were being
Past Perfect Tense : had been.
Future Indefinite Tense : shall be/ will be
Future Continuous Tense : shall be being / will be being
Future Perfect Tense : shall have been / will have been
In above sentence the sentence is present Indefinite Tense . So we have used "is" as auxiliary verb.
Position 3 ( Written) : We have to use the past participle form of the main verb. In the above sentence " main " verb is "write" whose past participle form is written. For all tenses we have to use past participle form of the verb to change the sentences into passive from active.
Position 4 (by) : Here we should use normally " by"
Position 5 ( me) : In this position we have to use the objective form of the subject of given active sentence. Now we should know the objective form of some subjects
Subject Object
I ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Me
We ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Us
You ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You
He ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Him
She ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Her
They ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Them
This is not that you have learnt all rules of voice changing. There are many variations . I shall discuss these in my next posting.
